2. Sermon Title: Superiority

3. Context: Matthew 2:1-5

(Matthew 2:1) Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying,

(Matthew 2:2) "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him."

(Matthew 2:3) When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

(Matthew 2:4) Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born.

(Matthew 2:5) They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for this is what has been written by the prophet.”

4. Preaching Note

1) Superiority

People have rank and are prized for their efforts. Efforts do not betray them. As much as they do an effort, they are doing what they have to do in society. However, not related to the effort, there is a superiority, which is coming from the discrimination. Although Black people do their best, they suffered discrimination by white supremacy. Slavery is over, but there is still the issue of racism, which is coming from discrimination.

Although gentiles and patients who were in the Bible loved Jesus, they also suffered from Jews who had elitism, which is spiritual superiority. As much as following the rule of the Bible, they had a sense of being chosen by God. They dismissed gentiles and patients who could not follow the rules of the Bible, unlike Jesus who befriended them.

Q.1 Have you ever been discriminated against or hurt by someone's superiority?

2) Magi

According to Matthew 2:1-5, there are magi who are three wise men. They saw the star announcing the birth of Jesus and came to the manger and did worship for celebrating Him. This story differs from Luke’s. According to Luke 2:8, shepherds in Israel, not wise men from the East, heard the voice of an angel and learned of the birth of Jesus. The reason Matthew's author mentions the Magi is to emphasize that those who came from the East were better than the Jews who followed the biblical rules. At that time, the Jews, especially the Pharisees, were immersed in the idea of the chosen people, so they did not spiritually realize the birth of Jesus and did not communicate with God, so the Magi came instead. Fellowship with God does not come from a sense of superiority. Fellowship with God begins with humble faith and a heart that loves others.

Q.2 Have you ever had a moment of fellowship with God?

3) I Have a Dream

The dream of Jesus was to be a friend to people who were marginalized by society. When Jews dismissed them, Jesus went to them and was a friend of them. This is the reason why Jesus was birth in the world. Martin Luther King Jr. also had a dream. In front of white people who showed superiority against Black people, he had a dream to be a friend with them. His faith was overcoming together facing discrimination from superiority.

A sense of superiority cuts off relationships with people. White supremacy occurs through violence by discrimination. Spiritual supremacy cuts off the relationship with God. Like the ministry of Jesus, spirituality is to be a friend to people. Like the speech of Martin Luther King Jr., faith is to overcome challenges together. Do not hurt from superiority. Do not hate people who have superiority. Through faith, to be a friend with them.

Q.3 Do you have a dream?
